Bot gead ye

Not dead yet.
Oh, oops forgot my specs ... one of these days will learn to 'touch type'.

,, And a Merry and Cheery to all  ...
in these uncertain times.

Sheesh, was trying to have a chat with a 'millennial' female ..
Erk; have you heard of the Korean war?
Mf; O, kim whatsis.
Me; No; the one before today.
Mf; O, Kim Kardashian!
Me; May your gods preserve you in your ignorance.
Mf; Fuck off, silly old pervert.

Ah, made that up .. So, what else is new ... or "newsworthy"?
Um, last year was 'charged' with the 'criminal offense' of 'misusing' a motor vehicle.
Um, think i, rang legal aid for options, explained the situation.
They told me to contact the Police Prosecution Unit for the "apprehension report".
plead 'guilty' ?? Why? Was never 'apprehended'.
If you plead 'not guilty' it will be transferred to a higher court - and you do not have enough witnesses on your side.
Um; ok.
???? think i ... was never "apprehended". Two very aggro policemen turned up on my doorstep at 6.30 pm  - two weeks after the so-called 'offence' and handed me a document 'banning' me from the pub for three days- dated two weeks ago ???

The next i know about this 'so-called' criminal offense is three weeks later - when i was  halfway to somewhere else. message on my phone .. Am at your place - your vehicle has been clamped (under setion [garbled] of the South Australian criminal code [section... garble garbl]... for 28 days.

(in the interest of facts here ... will have to say that the local plod knows me and sort of managed to clamp the wheels of one of my 'inoperable' vehicles).

Neverthe less .. still had to turn up in a magistrates Court (170klm round trip?) some months later.

First time in my life. Never made any claim on insurance. Never ... er, well ; for the past 45 years put so much as a dent in anyone elses motor vehicle  .. and here's me accused of the 'criminal offence' - aka "misuse of a motor vehicle" ... erk.

Um.  And here's me - a sort o scuffy knockabout .. thinks ..
Weeel ... i do have a white shirt parked away ... somewhere from a past life ... so; where is my 'sports coat - circa 1970'!   Oh, look; hidden in the pocket of that coat are two ties - both silk Givenchy.
Um; do i remember the 'windsor knot'?

Apparently yes. After sittting that Court for three hours or so waiting for my 'case' .. watching the 'mandatory' six month loss of licence for a mere 0 .001 over the whatever the mandatory Statute is about blood alcohol - at this point of time ... began to worry.

However ... after listening to the police prosecution persons half hearted reading of the typed version of whatever the local plods thought - based on the witness statement of the local barperson ..

The magistrate sort of .. OK : no criminal conviction: no loss of licence: - $200.00 fine - plus $160.00 Victims of crime levy.

Which i thought fair enough ...
But have never attended the Public Bar of any local Pub - since then.

AM not dead yet

Meh.
(though have, obviously, exceeded the Biblical limits of "three score and ten" ).

from the archives

Um; was. actually, looking up something else - but one link led to another ... and found this ..
(from another blog of mine - apparently 'in hibernation' but seems to remain accessible ... meh.)
Tis also linked to a 'youTube' video .. but not sure whether the links remain intact in this 'copy 'n' paste'.

Ah, ye good olde dayes - when i had finance and access to the 'latest' most powerful 'laptop' computers (meh). At present, probably, the latest 'iPhone' or 'iPad' has more 'computing power' than my present 6 year old MSI laptop.
It is still struggling to compile and edit the 1080i HD video of the trip to Kangaroo Island ... but never fear, will make it work, somehow.

An alternative FACTS .. version of "reality TV".

Barra Fishing Trip. Ord River, North-western Australia.

(PS. This post is still under construction .. heh. Am finding that embedding a video screen in the post is a little more complicated than first thought. Might have to separate video screen from blog. Or just put a link to it. Dunno yet. )

Well now. Have completed a six minute version of the day's fishing at Macka's Barra camp on the Ord River and uploaded it to Revver.
The other post and 4 minute remix on YouTube is here.

There are several video hosting sites, and a review of ten of them can be found here.

I chose Revver as they put a “clickable” Ad at the end. This is all very “experimental” at the moment, and am still discovering the trials and tribulations.

I feel that the camera work is only so-so, but had only recently purchased the Sony TRV355E, and had much trouble with wind-noise in the in-built microphone. Would really have liked to have spent several days there. It's difficult trying to film an “expedition” while taking part in it; so missed quite a few good photo ops of some of the action. Will have to keep the clips fairly short, as this one took nearly an hour and a half to 'upload' on to Revver, and even with Broadband, takes some time to “buffer down” before you can view it.

THE TRIP.

Had gone up to Kununurra in May 2004 for another event and, due to some cock-ups with arrangements, found that I had a spare day. Well, it seemed silly to travel all the way up to the Kimberley Region in North-western Australia and not have a crack at the mighty Barramundi.

Scientific Name: Lates calcarifer

Barramundi are protoandrous hermaphrodites: they start life as males, reaching maturity at around 3 to 4 years of age and later change gender and become females, usually at around age 5. Small fish are almost exclusively male with the percentage of females increasing with overall length.

Distribution
Distribution map of Barramundi

L.calcarifer has a very extensive range in tropical and semi-tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific. Its distribution extends from the Persian Gulf to southern China and southwards to the northern Australia. Within Australia its range extends from the Mary and Maroochy River systems in south-east Queensland northwards around the entire northern coast to Shark Bay in Western Australia.

I was very fortunate to get on this particular trip, as it was pretty much a last minute decision.
So, with the Barra dream of every Australian worth his salt in mind, went to the Tourist Office on the Monday and made enquiries. They gave me several brochures, but no advice.

Umm, think I, then made tracks for the nearest Pub. Y' know how it goes .. "G'day, who's the best Barra guide in town? Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit..". After about six conversations, many beers and much differing advice - counted up the votes, and found that Macka's Barra Camp came out 4:2.

Macka's Barra Camp has become an institution when it comes to big barra in the Kimberley. In fact, one of Macka's specialties is catching the extra big, meter plus Barramundi. Even experienced Barramundi anglers can go a lifetime without cracking the magic meter long mark, yet at Macca's many such anglers have achieved this goal in one trip.

One of the strengths of Macka and his team of guides is that they ensure no effort is spared to see that you have a most exciting days fishing.

Macka picks you up at Kununurra, and soon after you are fishing aboard his 6 meter long craft which is specially designed for barra fishing, and includes all first class tackle and associated gear.

As the name suggests, Maccas Barra Camp it is not only day trips, you can stay overnight and extend your trip for several days or more.

For more information call 08 9169 1759 or check out his website
Macka's Barra camp

O.K... rang the number, found that there was one spot available the next day (Tuesday), and booked a spot on a day trip.
So, was duly picked up from Kununurra backpackers at 6.00am by Macka in a rather battered Toyota Troupie containing three other 'hopefuls'.

It is always a risk, taking a trip into the 'unknown'. They could have been hoons from the 90's, buuut, found myself in company with three similar age nutcases. Merv; life of the party, always with a comment, quip, quote or joke. Brian; quiet, reserved. Michael, likewise.

The bitumen disappeared about halfway into the hour and a half trip, through a gate, then bumped and tossed our way to the "camp".

One of the interesting things about some buildings in the 'Top end' is their relative impermanence. There are two seasons .. the "wet", and the "dry". The "dry" lasts for about nine months, and the "wet" IS. While cyclones are not all that frequent, they happen, so the general attitude is "why build anything permanent, when most likely will have to build it again next year".
So, we arrived at the camp, and were introduced to Andy, 'guide:boat driver:cook:mechanic:expert in pretty well everything.'
(there are always 'dream' jobs, somewhere.. and as Cher says, ".. if I could turn back time”.)
A fast zoom down the Ord river until Andy decided that it was 'bait time', pulled up at a quiet spot about halfway between the camp and the River mouth, and set off with his cast net.
Barra will take anything, but generally prefer live bait. These are called 'popeye' mullet.
Another fast zoom down toward the estuary, where Andy decided on a 'likely' spot. We moored, were instructed in the intricacies of 'bait casting' with this particular reel. (I had been used to a Penn 500, and these, while similar, seemed tinsy and tricksy).

After several trial casts resulting in over-runs, patiently sorted out by Andy, we settled down to anticipation.

Ten minutes later, there was a quiet pull on my line, and watched it travel out into the centre of the stream. Huh?? think I. Then the penny dropped, I flipped on the drag and hauled back on the rod.
Barra are fighting fish. It breached, thrashed its head from side to side, determined to rid itself of this annoyance. It dived, swam toward the boat and away, breached again. At all times one must keep tension on the line; at all times, anticipate .. let it run .. pull it back.
Unfortunately the person who picked up the camera to record this event left it on “full zoom” so there isn't a lot to see of the tussle except a lot of out-of-focus muddy water. Have tried to edit in some of the more recognisable images while keeping the relevant sound track.

After twenty minutes, it was close enough to have a net underneath, and lifted onboard.
It was a mighty tussle, and at the end of it I was shaking like a leaf in an autumn wind. This fish was 1.1 metres in length, and a female, so was required to return it to the water.

It was, in retrospect, an anti climax. I landed it at about 9am, and then caught another smaller Barra some 20 minutes later. You will see in the video that Brian “hooked” another fish, but Barra have a habit of “throwing” hooks, and he lost it. Try as he might, Andy could not find another fish. Mine were only two fish landed that day. From 9am until dusk we searched, tried several spots. Proving once again that wild fish are .. well .. wild. there are no guarantees in nature.

I think I was lucky (though prefer to think of it a superior skill heh heh). The other three were probably envious as well, but didn't let on.

Since the expense of getting up that way was considerable, I don't think that I'll be doing a "repeat" any time soon... but it's nice to have this photo on the wall.

update for no real reason

Yep, have been to see local Docs. They have everything they need to know about my innards.

Um, my physical innards.
Who can guess what is contained within my genetic and 'psychological' innards?

Curious conundrum.

On the road again

Ah. s'pose had better post something (don't write real letters much, these days, either - perhaps have been living in relatively comfortable 'isolation' for far too long - five and a half years. My, how time flies).

However - 'Tis the season to be merry - So had better wish my one or two 'followers'

May your Festive Season Be Merry
and your next years be fruitful.

Um,  where was i ... Ah. When i first moved into this cottage it was, pretty much, a long distance "handshake" from the land owners.  First contact was by phone, then email. In essence; "move in when you like, stay as long as you like. Rent $100/week. If you're happy, we're happy. No 'Agents', no 'leases'.

However, time passes, situations change. Was informed a month or so ago that this cottage is now "on the market - For sale.  Do, frankly, think that the price is a bit ambitious - but best wishes to them - they have been remarkably generous to allow me to stay with no rent increase.

Ironically (or naively), had sort of expected  to be here for a few more years, and sold my caravan a couple of months previously.

However c'est la vie. Adventure beckons. Have almost cleared all my STUFF (surprising how much STUFF a stationary person collects over time) - most of the important bits are now in local storage (half my furniture came from the local 'dump' Waste Transfer Station, and has been returned) - and the Jackaroo 4X4 is almost "ready for the road". Am "homeless" and departing for parts unknown this Friday 11 December.

Have an idea as to where am headed next but, while will be taking the laptop and 'mobile' phone, 'technical' communication will be sporadic (so what's new - i hear you say).

Anyhoo, Cheers and Best Wishes to All. Am not dead yet, and will try to do Updates from wherever i am along the track.

Remembrace of Blogger past

Um, this is interesting. Apparently was "signed out" of this blog (hanging about since 2005 - well before Gurgle and its billion dollar algorithms acquired the rights ...).

However, remain alive - and - while legs are appendages that allow me to wander about, sit astride and in control of a motor cycle .. and remain capable of "kicking" - my mind and attitude, now, can't be bothered.

Much.

As of now have to cope with a neighbor who calls me a 'dickhead'.
So, what does that actually mean - coming from a 25 year old who everyone else  around here, as far as they tell me, think of him as "20 cents short of a dollar" (vernacular for a bit dim in the head).

Perhaps the the most galling  part of this from my point of view - is that he tells me that he has 'bought' a slim sliver of land - one sliver of Crown land away from where i live.

How he and his partner are going to manage to feed 5 horses, 2 sheep, and two dogs on it defeats even my experiencial logic. Especially since the 'plot of land' is apparently too small to even build a house on.

This, of course, has a 'back story'. So far they, and their stock, have eaten every "free" blade of grass around here; have been locked out of at least one Crown Land paddock ...

And this moron calls ME a dickhead ... ?

On the other hand - there is a whisper in the wind that my landlords have decided to sell this cottage that have lived in (and loved) for 5 and a half years ....

Sooo, once a Gypsy, always a Gypsy - i guess.

Will, of course, update my one or two readers - if and when -
Sumbuddy tells me sumfink.

Apart from that - you know as much as i do ..... heh.

Second childhood ... ?

Yer, well, in my case it may well be closer to 'third' childhood - if one calculates from age 24 ... heh.

o, hi, remain alive

Um, have booked self into a "motorcycle rider's course". Yer, i know, have seen the TV show "retrain your brain". Once upon a time ... i remember my trusty Suzuki 185 trail bike. (oddly, now that am writing this - am beginning to remember my 100cc Suzuki "commuter" bike.

Sort of interesting, really ...
Am guessing that a 50 year history, and knowledge, of negotiating roads and road conditions across the length and breath of this Australian Island/continent - have never put a dent in any other motor vehicle for the past 40 years, may or not, count. However, has been a long time since have sat astride a "motorbike".

Back a while .. 60 hours in "gliders" - up in the air aerial thingos.
Horses, yes, motorbikes, no.

Um, have looked at the 'book', words of "rules and regulations".

Can i pass this relatively simple "learners test"?

Is it all worth it ...

I wonder. What have i done, what have i achieved? What remains to be done.

It is, perhaps, easier for those with Family. Children. I have none - well one, a son ...

Fruit of my loins. Has a genetic history stretching back to Lincolnshire circa 1580. With many twists and turns though several countries - even has a sort of famous (G,G,G, uncle). How many boys can claim that? And yet, and yet .... he refuses to acknowlege me. A "father" i never was, but AM his sire.

Did i do something "wrong"? Self thinks not - but the fact remains - he never experienced what is now touted as a "real" family. A mum, dad, 2.5 children, brick veneer home with white picket fence. Perhaps a dog, cat , half a dozen hamsters ... mice under the floorboards. Harvey Normal furniture and a 42 inch plasma TV screen.

What he was born into, was a Mum, Dad - both a bit 'theatrical' (hey, it was past the 'swinging 60's and into the 'revolutionary' 70's). Um, his Mum's father was a rather strict, Calvinist, school Headmaster .... which made things sort of difficult. Oddly enough, i really liked my 'Mother-in-law', A blackhead Celt from way back. Have no idea how a  'strict Pom' and a 'rebellious Celt' stayed together for so long. 5 children.

So, my wife (the eldest) was born in Singapore, i liked her, she married me. One son.

Yes, i know, complicated. My own immediate family?
Mother was third child of a country blacksmith. Father was .... not really sure; never knew him.
Know his "history" - but he died in 1945; six months after i was born. O yes, mother and father married long before that .... but have often wondered why.

My father's family were, actually, quite "well off" in Adelaide .. Tooraky sort of people - educated, with servants and stuff..

So, cutting a longish story short - has left me with a sort of wonder as to who i should be; how i should behave - or simply be "independent" and 'make it up' as i go along.

Now, at my age, it's sort of scary.

In hibernation fer the winter

Dunno wot wombats do, here; when it gets chilly.
Perhaps they migrate to warmer climes.
Perhaps they dig deep burrows,
hunker down, curl up; and sleep.

Until the weather (and attitude) warms.

Have only ever seen one live wombat,
hereabouts; and three dead carcasses
 by the roadside.

Apparently it's not a good idea to migrate;
across technology.

Um ...

Thought that had better post something - just in case my occasional readers/followers suspect my demise. Nup, am still alive, in relative good health; pottering about in the garden and locality; occasionally reading about what's happening in the "other world" via ABC online .... BBC (the one in England, Billy, not you), the Guardian .. etc. Refuse, point blank, these days, to try to decipher whatever the Mudrake publishing empire is attempting.

There is, of course, the old adage - 'tis better to keep mouth shut; and be thought a fool - than speak, and remove all doubt.

life in the old girl yet

Um, has been a long dream of mine - a four wheel drive "bush basher" (in local parlance).

Never had the finance (or status) to purchase what is called a "Toorak tractor" - one of those very expensive, oddly designed, "bells and whistles"' plastic motor vehicles aimed at the "up and coming" younger people with "aspirations".

However, while wandering the local vicinity - found this, hiding in the long grass at the back of someone's yard  -

(oh,just  to clarify a minor point - the motor vehicle is now in my back yard).

She'll scrub up nicely, methinks.

my world has shrunk

Mr. Mystie - my world has shrunk. I find, now, that i have little interest in what happens beyond the distance further than which i can walk.
(or ride a horse - but that's a different story .. heh)

Um, am re-posting this 'comment' that i just made on a previous post as it  was (a) "off the cuff" and (b) made me think a bit more about what i meant.

While yes, it is true that i live alone .. but not necessarily "by my self", am not a 'hermit'. Have read some rather astonishing stories of people who have 'survived'  'solitary confinement'  for some many years with themselves intact - but most notably those accounts of Tibetan monks walled into a cave for up to 8 years with no contact or interaction with human beings or other living thing; whatsoever.  Whether true or not is an interesting point; haven't been there, nor done that. Would also argue that the daily supply of food through whatever small 'hole in the wall' may well qualify as "interaction". The longer philosophy and discussion of the meaning and definitions of "solitary" are beyond the intention and scope of this blog.

However, my life is far from that version of "solitary".  Yesterday i went out and played several versions of football with Andy from round the back when he came to collect his 6 yr old son from the school bus at 3.30pm.  He teaches 'soccer' to the schoolkids .. though seems to have a good understanding of both "Aussie Rules" and "Rugby" (both versions). (would, actually, be interesting to research the origins of 'pig's bladder' (odd-shaped) ballgames .. and/or 'round ball' games. Have read that some of them originated from whacking the severed head of the leader of the 'opposing tribe' around on whatever field happened to be in full view of both tribes. Thankfully? "civilisation?" seems to have discarded that notion - or has it?)

Yesterday, also,  was yet another 'interaction' between me, a horse and human beings.

My tutor at the riding school is proving to be what i would call somewhat ... erm, assertive, with horses - which is fine by me, as a general principle; but self, apparently, has a tendency (according to her) to be "soft-handed" on the reins. And no, I don't feel the necessity to "kick it" when the horse turns its head to see what my feet are doing.  Am, of course, being a bit simplistic and short on detail with these 'descriptions'; and, since she prefers geldings to mares, am now wondering if she is also sending a message to me that she is the "herd leader" (which is also ok, at this point of time).

The first horse i was given to ride was/is a 17 hand gelding. A very experienced 'eventer' as am told, but have never seen it under experienced hands in a 'dressage' situation. I tend to think of it as "Mr. Plod" (not its real name); big, docile, obedient.

Two lessons on Mr. Plod, then on to ... um, am now not sure of its name. Was under the impression that its name was Tom, a 14.5hand quarterhorse gelding (or Galloway) as told).  He felt, well, too small, but was extremely responsive to foot and leg pressure - not that am expert in all this, as yet; am still re-learning some considerable changes co-ordinating  leg muscles between "walking" and "riding".

Yesterday i had the pleasure of interacting with a mare by the name of Tara. 15.5 hands. A failed racehorse, my tutor refers to her as a "ditzy blonde bimbo". Well, dunno why, but i rather liked her (Tara .. though the tutor is also OK .. heh - am sure that the 'armchair psychologists' should be able to manufacture all sorts of guesses as to why i liked this particular equine ).

Yes, Tara prefers to travel in a straight line .. well, with a bias to one side. It's called 'following the rail'; and quick to get into a fast canter.  Even so, in a dressage situation, she can step sideways on forelegs and shift her back-end around when foot pressure tells her.  Was only with her for an hour, but loved every minute.

On a different note ..

Am not sure whether i really need to interact with human beings who come up with ..from the comments box ..

" ..and the struggling remnants of the alcohol-pickled wreckage of what was, no doubt, once your brilliantly functioning brain ..."
.. which oddly enough, i view as a - perhaps intriguingly articulate and literary - backhanded compliment .. as i also do this gem .. recently said to my face -
"Stop staring, ya stupid old prick! haven't ya anything better to do".

(long story behind THAT one ..heh)

Another (snowy) day

Well, two and a half days. Began falling Tuesday afternoon at about 2.30pm, then continued through the night and most of Wednesday morning.  Ended up with about two inches on the ground. Has mostly melted by this morning. Satellite dish is now clear.

Will post some pics, later.
who stole my car?(wednesday morn)

kiddie romp

One of the things that fascinated me this morning was the number and variety of birds hanging around waiting for 'breakfast'. Word spreads, I guess ('feed them, and they will come'). Have been regularly putting seed out at about 7am each morning, and have a 'regular' group of six or so King parrots,  same number of rosellas and the occasional Pied Currawong. This morning? Ah, roughly 20-30 King parrots, same number rosellas (of various age groups), 12 or so Pied Currawongs, six or seven Satin Bowerbirds, a couple of magpies, and some pigeons in the cherry tree.

There is also a chook that flew over the fence seeking refuge from next door some weeks ago and took up residence on my tankstand (now i know why they are called 'domesticated'; as it also pays 'tribute' - or rent - in the shape of the occasional egg.  The others come and go as they please, in complete freedom; and just give me great joy watching the bright colours and antics).

Has, however, been a bittuva drain on the woodpile. I generally only 'light it up' at about 4pm in the evenings when the temperature drops below 4C (daytimes have been quite warm  ... 8-10C), but the past few days have rarely scraped above 2C.  There is, of course, some slight twinge of 'guilt', as am contributing to the CO2 levels - but 'justify' it to self by the thought that am surrounded by thousands of acres of 'old growth' bushland and forest; which provides a continuous and renewable supply of 'dead-fall' fuel for the fire.  Not, of course, a recommended option for the millions of human beings jampacked into cities and 'high-rise' urban areas who seem to have an unhealthy dependence on 'electricity' .. to power their 'information' systems .. which, apparently, insist on feeding them "advertainment" - and refuse to stress that it's not only the atmosphere that is suffering from CO2 overdose - but the 'out of sight, out of mind' oceans .. which, more or less, power the planet's weather systems ... and the consequences of that is ...

However, as am not the "Emperator of the Universe" can't do much about that, so will continue to keep the cottage doors shut, imagine that the 'rest of the world' doesn't exist; hunker down for the duration, trust to faith, and see if old Sol will re-appear in due course.

i don't know

 [added to]
Yep. there was a previous post, but was sort of 'making it up as i went along', so parked in the 'draft' to chill. perhaps i should become more of a  twit, and tweet. Did look at that 'internet' thingo this morning, but Nah, not yet.
So, some unconnected sentences ..
Another chilly morning, light dusting of snow.
Should i support "save the cattle" or "sell the cattle".
Still haven't figured out what to do with the wandering goats.
oops, another distraction - the baked beans are burning.
damn, the yolks on the eggs froze.
oops, the bowerbirds are in the backyard again.
Have to chop more wood.
mm, am running out of wood for fireplace.
a bit chilly, here, another fifty dollars.
Should i move to somewhere warmer.
Damn, spend a few hours concentrating on 'internet' time
and the fire goes out.
Abbey! don't just lay there with a sore foot,
go chop some wood or something.

etc, etc, etc etc,

OK Smartiepants

Who changed my profile pic?
Own up ( email me)

(be nice to know "how"; but if you tell me who, or indeed "why" - I might put the image 'upfront', if that makes sense).

ZOOOOOM!

from this ...

...to this.
Oh, wow ..
The camera is a Canon SX30IS, purchased from Ryda dot com, located in Sydney NSW. 'Twas a pleasure to do business with them. Phone calls and emails answered quickly (and in an accent that i could understand).

Highly recommended.

All i have to do now is figure out what all the little buttons and dials on the camera actually do.

[PS: the author of this blog is not a 'family member' of Ryderdotcom, has no 'business interest' or investments. Just a happy customer].

legal depression

O, ho ho. Am not a 'lawer', but could make some laughs out of it. (love the bloke from Dallaz, Texaz)

However, one of the things that keeps me alive is that have yet to figure out a "neat" way of disappearing without leaving a mess ..

pseudonym change

[edited 6 Apr 2011]
Just a quick note. There are far too many "David"'s about - and derivations thereof -  so (hopefully) have added a 'unique indentifier'. Am still the same online "Davo" that have been since 2005.

And yes, have deliberately kept the format of this blog the way it - more or less - began. (yer well have fiddled with the sidebar, apparently)

Nah . stuffit, don't like 'Davojh'; sounds like a suppressed cough.  Moving to Davoh. (why should i bother?)
