Awakening

I began
as nothing.
Atoms formed, combined -
one cell; two conjoined,
then by DNA blueprint;
multiplied.

Was sightless, secure in comfort,
Neural pathways grew, multiplied,
vibrations grew
into awareness,
a knowing.

Then
rejected, ejected, expelled,
gasping, calling, squalling
for oxygen, for breath, for life.
